Investment in Ironbound Infrastructure: Wilson Avenue Repaved, East Ferry Street Scheduled for 2015

Ironbound Business Improvement DistrictNewark’s Ironbound Business Improvement District (IBID) has been a hub for construction activity in the East Ward with a milling and repaving project on Wilson Avenue and sewer line repairs on Ferry Street. While an inconvenience to local residents, businesses and visitors in the short term, the work will provide long term benefits for all. Businesses and restaurants on Wilson Avenue and Ferry Street remained open for business throughout the construction activity.

Wilson Avenue between Ferry Street and Jabez Street was closed for milling and paving from September 11th till 16th. Work on Ferry Street to repair a more than 100-year-old sewer line was also recently completed. Ferry Street was closed between Prospect and Jefferson Streets and then from Jefferson to Monroe Streets so the project could move ahead. Cross-traffic on Prospect, Congress and Jefferson Streets was permitted during the work, and detours were clearly marked.

“The Wilson Avenue paving reflects the commitment we have made in the past to continue to improve the quality of life of the residents and business owners of the Ironbound, and, in this case, the Wilson Avenue area, which is now part of the IBID,” noted East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador. “Next year, we have already programmed the paving of East Ferry Street.”

“We thank Mayor Ras Baraka and Councilman Augusto Amador for supporting our community and moving ahead with important and necessary infrastructure improvements including street paving and water and sewer line repairs,” added Seth A. Grossman, the IBID’s Executive Director. “While these projects have provided some short-term inconvenience, we appreciate the patience of Ironbound stakeholders who recognize that improvements to the Ironbound’s infrastructure are necessary for our quality of life and ability to compete with other districts and destinations. These improvements make business and community life work.”
