Keeping the Lamps Lit a Priority in Ironbound District

There are nearly 100 street lamps located throughout the Ironbound District in Newark. Keeping them lit, as well as keeping track of when they aren’t working, is a tough job. Staff members from the Ironbound Business Improvement District (IBID) have made this effort a top priority and have built effective partnerships with the City of Newark and PSE&G to get the job done.

“Streets that are clean and well-lighted are hallmarks of a well-managed community,” noted Seth A. Grossman, the IBID’s Executive Director. “Going the extra mile to make sure that our street lamps are working properly, and reporting outages when necessary, underscores our commitment to all of the Ironbound’s stakeholders, from business and property owners and residents to the thousands of people who visit the Ironbound District every week for great shopping, dining and entertainment.”

Chris Bernardo, principal of Commercial District Services, the company that provides streetscape services to the IBID and other managed districts in Newark and beyond, said working cooperatively with representatives of the City of Newark as well as PSE&G’s Lamp Outage and Underground Departments, has been the key to the program’s success. “Our program partners are critically important and working 24/7 on the street lamp issue in the Ironbound District and throughout the City of Newark,” he stated.

Dennis Ceron, an IBID staff member, spent countless hours creating a report noting every street lamp location in the district, and then highlighting those in need of repair or replacement. Because darkness was required for the lamps to turn on, much of the work on this project had to be completed during evening hours.

“Lots of people were curious about what I was doing, and were very appreciative when they learned about our work,” said Ceron. “Creating this report also allowed me to keep track of other streetscape issues we manage while I was surveying the district, including illegal dumping, damaged or missing trash cans, graffiti and other issues that negatively impact people in the Ironbound.”

Bernardo also added that CDS is converting Ceron’s list into an app that will be used when the IBID’s Clean & Green Team is on the street to report lamp outages and send that information directly to the City so corrective action can be scheduled quickly and efficiently.
