Visitors to Newark, New Jersey, the state’s largest and most dynamic city, have come to know that dining and shopping in the Ironbound will be a highlight of their trip. The district is close to all of Newark’s top destinations including the Prudential Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark Museum, Rutgers University, even Red Bull Arena just across the Passaic River in nearby Harrison. Because of the Ironbound’s strategic location at a nexus for transportation, travelers arriving by air, rail, bus or automobile will find the district easily accessible no matter where you are heading in the region.

What many travelers from outside the greater Newark area don’t realize is the Ironbound’s proximity to other cultural, sports and entertainment centers in northern New Jersey - like the Meadowlands Sports Complex, and yes, New York City-just 20 minutes away.

Foodies and restaurant aficionados from New Jersey and New York, from other parts of the United States and around the world have come to recognize the Ironbound as the state’s top dining district. More than 170 restaurants present a tapestry of tastes encompassing the cuisines of Portugal, Spain and Brazil, as well as many other culinary traditions and styles. From fine dining with accompanying European-style service, to casual and convivial neighborhood barbecue grills, tapas and seafood bars, the Ironbound is the place to be for great food and wine plus a warm and friendly welcome.

International shopping that matches the Ironbound’s dining scene for variety and quality adds another element to enjoy. The shopping so unique, with clothing, jewelry, shoes and more from Europe and Brazil you just won’t find at your local mall. Plus, the Ironbound is located in Newark’s Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ), so shoppers pay just 3.5% sales tax at qualified stores in the district.

When people are traveling for business or pleasure through Newark Liberty International Airport, many are taking advantage of the convenient connections to Newark Penn Station, the gateway to the Ironbound District. In just a few short minutes, a train or shuttle ride from the airport, or surrounding hotels and motels, transports them to a world-class dining, shopping and entertainment district. Of course taxis, private limousine and van services will also be more than happy to take travelers from the airport and their local accommodations to the Ironbound.

New Jersey’s Meadowlands Sports Complex is connected to the Ironbound District through the region’s efficient transportation network. Home to the NFL Giants and Jets, and host of numerous concerts, family events and more, both MetLife Stadium and the IZOD Center are located just minutes away from Newark’s Ironbound and Newark Liberty International Airport by car or public transportation.  The Meadowlands Rail Line is the best way to travel to football games and major events at MetLife Stadium with service from the Frank R. Lautenberg Rail Station at Secaucus Junction connecting to Newark Penn Station and the Ironbound just a short walk away.

Visitors to New York City also find that Newark’s Ironbound is almost like another borough. NJ Transit, Amtrak and PATH trains run regularly from Penn Station in New York to Newark Penn Station just minutes away from the Big Apple. Buses from Manhattan’s Port Authority Terminal also travel directly to Newark Penn Station.
